Rafah Attack: Pakistan Calls Blatant Defiance of ICJ Ruling
Eight missiles were fired by Israeli airplanes on Sunday night against a tent camp that was housing thousands of Palestinians in the western Rafah district known as Tel Al-Sultan.
Targeting of Displaced Individuals: Breach of International Law
The Foreign Office (FO) has issued a strong statement condemning the Israeli occupation forces for targeting individuals who were displaced earlier due to Israeli bombardment and sought shelter in a refugee camp. This act, according to the FO, constitutes yet another breach of international humanitarian law.
Defiance of ICJ Measures
The FO characterized the attack as a “blatant defiance” of the additional provisional measures issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on May 24. These measures ordered Israel to immediately cease its military offensive in Rafah, aligning with its obligations under the Genocide Convention. The worsening humanitarian conditions faced by civilians further underscore the urgency of compliance with these measures.
Pakistan's Stance
Pakistan has reiterated its demand for the immediate and unconditional implementation of the ICJ orders issued on May 24, 2024. The FO emphasized the need for measures to fully protect civilians in Gaza and hold the Israeli occupation forces accountable for what it terms the “Gaza genocide.”
Call for International Action
Pakistan has called upon the UN Security Council to intervene and prevent further attacks against civilians in Rafah. It urges the council to take effective measures to protect the people of Gaza from further harm.
Pakistan's Diplomatic Position
Pakistan does not recognize the state of Israel and advocates for an independent Palestinian state based on internationally agreed parameters. It supports the pre-1967 borders with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as the capital of Palestine.
Diplomatic Efforts
Pakistan has consistently attempted to find peaceful solutions to both domestic and foreign problems, including during the upheaval in Muzaffarabad. In recent months, Pakistan has consistently raised the issue of Israel’s actions in Gaza at the United Nations through its permanent representative, Ambassador Munir Akram. This diplomatic engagement reflects Pakistan’s commitment to addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis and advocating for the rights of the Palestinian people on the international stage.
